Barnsley Youth Theatre began back in 1990 when two groups of young people from Penistone and Kendray got together and decided to form a Drama group. Based at PADS in the town centre the group started to meet regularly and appointed a director to work with them.
From then on the group rapidly grew in numbers and reputation performing at least one major production per year in schools and theatres around Barnsley to increasingly larger audiences. The group continued to grow and develop to become one of the largest, most successful and respected Youth Theatres in the region.
Today the Youth Theatre is based at Carlton Community College in a brand new school building, where there are three different groups suited to children and young people from the ages of 8 to 25. Our ethos is to operate an ‘open door’ policy and welcome new members to the Youth Theatre without selection or audition. We have 3 groups:
At times the three groups work separately and at other times together on larger scale performances.
The Youth Theatre is funded entirely through subscriptions (subs) and ticket sales.
